One Day School Program

ODS3

The One Day School program delivers fast paced, individually differentiated programs for high-potential students in Catholic schools in Launceston and Deloraine.

Each Friday during term time, 60 high-potential and gifted students from Grades 2 to 6 participate in an extended curriculum designed to meet their needs and provide the opportunity for them to work with like-minded peers.

The One Day School program consists of three fluid class groups of mixed ages with students working together in different groups throughout the day to extend their learning in literacy, numeracy, and STEM activities.

Emphasis is placed on teaching the students strategies that will improve their autonomy and learning. Teachers have also implemented specific strategies to create a learning environment that is supportive of difference, well-structured, and maintains high expectations of students throughout the school day to enable them to thrive.

An initiative of Tasmanian Catholic school staff, the One Day School commenced as a pilot program in 2019. The University of New South Wales subsequently undertook research to determine the program’s effectiveness in providing for the learning and social-emotional needs of students participating in the pilot program. Following the success of the pilot, funding was secured to continue running the program through to 2023.

Supporting teachers to deliver differentiated programs

ODS2

Commencing in 2021, the One Day School will host teachers for five consecutive Fridays to provide hands-on professional learning in gifted education. By becoming a part of the One Day School teaching team, teachers will spend the first day observing prior to planning a unit of work which they will then deliver over the following four Fridays.

The One Day School Coordinator will engage with teachers to plan their work using strategies that are known to improve the depth and complexity of content for high-potential and gifted students.

Accessing the program

Places in the One Day School program are open to students from participating schools. Students may be nominated by their school, parents, or teachers with standardised tests, reports, questionnaires, and other school-based assessments taken into consideration for admission.

Once entered into the One Day School program, students may continue with the program from Grade 2 through to Grade 6* provided they remain enrolled in one of the participating schools.

Grade 6 students complete their placement in Term Three of their final primary school year at which point a new intake of students commences. Places in the program may also become available if students leave the program or discontinue their studies at participating program schools.
