Following a career in the Royal Australian Navy gaining his fitting and turning trades certificate and ten years working in the local Launceston area, Marcus Hughes began his teaching career in 1994 after retraining in education.

Of the changes Marcus has seen in Catholic education, he says “There has been no real change in the curriculum but there have been significant changes in the environment we teach in.”

In his 25 years as a teacher at St Patrick’s College what Marcus values most is the students.

“Meeting and making a difference in the lives of students. Seeing the joy a student has when he or she presents work that is the best they can do.”

Working in Catholic education also brings its own rewards.

“I enjoy the people I work with and in particular those who share a common Christian goal.”
