Thank you for an amazing Term Two in Catholic education!
We hope you have a safe and happy term break.
This Sunday is the 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time and the Gospel reading is Matthew 13:24-30.
The Parable of Weeds among the Wheat
He put before them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to someone who sowed good seed in his field; but while everybody was asleep, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and then went away. So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared as well. And the
slaves of the householder came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where, then, did these weeds come from?’ He answered, ‘An enemy has done this.’ The slaves said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ But he replied, ‘No; for in gathering the weeds you would uproot the wheat along with them. Let both of them grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Collect the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.’
This year NAIDOC Week has provided Catholic schools around the state with the opportunity to collectively celebrate and recognise the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This has been exemplified through the organisation of events and activities that educate and empower our students, and engage local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities throughout our schools.
We acknowledge the tremendous efforts of our dedicated teachers, parents, and community members who worked tirelessly to ensure this year's NAIDOC Week is resounding success. We love sharing your stories and can't wait to see what next term brings. See how some of our schools have been celebrating, below!
St Aloysius Catholic College
The College community enthusiastically embraced NAIDOC Week celebrations this year. The theme ‘For our Elders’ was the main focus of the St Aloysius ceremony at the Middle Campus as they paid tribute to the achievements of local Aboriginal Elder Uncle Rodney Dillon. Guests arrived to a snowy reception acknowledging that the palawa lived in lutruwita through two ice ages. First Nation students led a whole Campus assembly, with speeches honouring their ancestors. A highlight of the event was a special dance ceremony performed by students. Special guests joined staff and palawa students afterwards for lunch and a very special cake.
Students at the Junior Campus celebrated NAIDOC Week by attending a dedicated Mass. Proud, young palawa student Zoe Frost began by delivering a moving Welcome to Country. Fr Mike Delaney and Acting Principal Mr Brad Canning commended all the palawa students for how well they read their prayers of intercession, liturgical reading and Gospel acclamation. It was wonderful to hear the church filled with song. Thank you Fr Mike for individually blessing over 400 young students.
St Virgil's College
Accompanied by members of the Tasmanian Aboriginal community, St Virgil's College continues to incorporate learning beyond the walls of a classroom and to share experiences with staff and students of other schools.

St Patrick's Latrobe, Our Lady of Lourdes and St Brendan-Shaw College
Students from St Patrick's Catholic School, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School, and St Brendan-Shaw College attended the Flag Raising at TIAGARRA on Monday this week for NAIDOC week. TIAGARRA is one of the oldest Aboriginal operated Museum and Keeping Places in Australia and is owned by the Aboriginal community.
St Paul's Catholic School
Prep students at St Paul's Catholic School located on timtumili minanya Country or palawa Country began to explore the question “What is Country?” The class worked together finding objects in their room to make different types of Country. Sea Country, sky Country and land Country. Each student was given an object and they took turns adding their object to the centre of the circle.
Students explored a big map of lutruwita/Tasmania and discussed what life might have been like for First Nations people living on this land thousands of years ago. The class brainstormed what First Nations people might have needed to survive and drew objects like fire, shelter and food on small paper before placing it on the map.
The prep class also read 'Somebody's Land' by Adam Goodes and painted pictures as a means of reflection.
Sacred Heart College
Sacred Heart College located on timtumili minanya Country or Palawa Country unveiled their new Aboriginal Mural with artist, Reuben Oates Art. The College were privileged to have members of the Tasmanian Aboriginal Community join them for this event. Their presence alongside the College's students underscores the importance of understanding and acknowledging our shared history and fostering space for meaningful conversations.
